Turkey

  1. c.1299: Rise of the Ottoman Principality; capturing Constantinople in 1453 forms an empire across Europe and Asia.
  2. 1914–1918: Allied defeat of the Ottoman Empire in WWI leads to military occupation and partitioning plan.
  3. 1919–1923: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk leads the Turkish War of Independence against foreign forces.
  4. 1923: Proclamation of the Republic of Turkey, followed by sweeping secular, legal, educational, and cultural modernizations (1924–1937).
  5. 1952: Joins NATO, becoming a vital strategic bridge between European and Middle Eastern security systems.
