- 19th Century: Slovak National Awakening establishes formal written language and distinct national identity.
- 1918: Joins Czechs to form the new democratic republic of Czechoslovakia following WWI.
- 1939–1989: WWII puppet state status followed by reunited Czechoslovakia falling under Soviet-dominated communist rule.
- 1989: Velvet Revolution peacefully overthrows communist authority.
