Hungary

  1. 896 AD: Arrival of the Magyars; King Stephen I establishes the Christian Kingdom of Hungary in 1000 AD.
  2. 1526: Battle of Mohács leads to Ottoman conquest and two centuries of partition between Ottomans and Habsburgs.
  3. 1867: Austro-Hungarian Compromise grants equal status in the Dual Monarchy empire.
  4. 1920: Treaty of Trianon after WWI strips Hungary of two-thirds of its historical territory.
  5. 1956: Anti-Soviet Hungarian Revolution is brutally crushed by Soviet military intervention.
  6. 1989: Fall of communism and peaceful transition to democracy, opening its borders to help break the Iron Curtain.
