Colombia

  1. Home to advanced Indigenous civilizations, including the Muisca, prior to 16th-century Spanish colonization.
  2. 1819: Simón Bolívar defeats Spanish forces at Boyacá; the Congress of Angostura founds Gran Colombia later that year.
  3. 1831: Dissolution of Gran Colombia leaves the Republic of New Granada, forerunner of present-day Colombia, as an independent republic.
  4. 1899–1902: Devastating civil war ("Thousand Days' War"); Panama's secession in 1903, after the Colombian Congress rejects a canal treaty, follows the war.
  5. 1948–1958: *La Violencia* period triggers decades of partisan violence and instability.
  6. Late 20th Century: Armed conflict involving left-wing guerrillas, paramilitaries, and powerful drug cartels challenges state security.
  7. 2016: Peace accord signed with FARC guerrillas, opening a path toward economic modernization and regional integration.
