The First Message

The first message ever sent between two distant computers crashed after two letters. Write the story of the night the network first spoke — and the quiet enormity nobody in the room fully grasped.

On 29 October 1969, the first message was sent over ARPANET between UCLA and Stanford. The operators tried to type 'LOGIN'; the system crashed after 'LO' — an accidental, fitting first word.

Field notes

Did you know

Craft tip

The best origin stories are anticlimactic in the moment. Play the gap between small event and vast consequence.

Try this

Write the log-book entry as the machine might have written it about the humans.
